The Lichfield Angel
I saw this striking carving in the Silk Roads exhibition at the British Museum, where I went with an old friend. Dating from the 8th century AD in central England under King Offa, it is apparently one of the finest examples of foreign influenced British carving of that time. The draped clothing, delicately feathered wings and finely modelled hair show eastern Mediterranean influnces.
