Do the work

Rather a wobbly start to the day if truth be told with things bubbling up in the ol’ noggin, but I did the right thing and picked up the phone to my best friend (the absolute best kind, where you haven’t spoken in ages, but it’s like it was yesterday when you do talk again) who gave me good counsel as I took in some air.

I thought a lot about Shrinking, the TV show on Apple about psychiatrists, and some of the themes in there of grief, aging, poor physical and mental health (it is actually a comedy drama, believe it or not!) and so on. One of the stand out lines of guidance for me was “do the work”, which in context means that if you’re facing some mental health struggles, you have to acknowledge that nothing is going to change if you don’t actually do the work on trying to improve your own mindset.

I’ve definitely been guilty of letting this slip lately and was in danger of backsliding into old, bad habits as a means of a quick fix. It always seems to happen around this time of year, but feels a little more pronounced this time around. This may be a part of the continuing adjustment to being a single man and finally, actually taking responsibility for my own happiness rather than putting it in the hands of another.

Or maybe I’m just mental? It's a fine line...

Either way, there’s things and projects that I would like to bring to fruition this year, so it’s time get back to it and do the work.
