Still pleasantly warm(ish). It's funny how 16° seems warm after the long very cold spell. But bloomin' windy.
Archie and I set off on a mission. I had been reading about a famous folk pub that I'd never visited, despite passing it every time I go into town. In the 70s my pals and I would pop up to Edinburgh, my parents having just moved there. We went to another folksy pub in town, The Waverley, although this one was handier. The Corries, my favourites, played in both pubs - before they were the Corries - while they were at Art College.
My bus stopped right at the door. But it wasn't open. Too early. However, we met Boris, a schnauzer we meet often - they used to hate each other, but now Archie loves to see him, or to be more precise, his mum, who always has loads of treats!
Then the pub door was opened, and I waited a couple of minutes so as not to appear desperate, then we wandered in. A nice smoky smell - as in a wood fire smoky. No music, of course, in a live music venue. It was tiny, and well worn. A piano tucked away in the corner, old photos and paintings of customers. Very cosy. An older barman with long grey hair and a long grey beard - he suited the place. I had a half pint and some crisps. The place got very busy! Archie was popular. (Extra)
We walked down to the Grassmarket. It was so busy! We called in to Mary's Ice Cream Parlour because I need to sit down with an ice cream to enjoy it fully, and it was windy and dreich outside. I shared the seat with a mother and daughter, and learned that the three year old's granny was 99!
We didn't go up the Vennel Steps (which I read recently are now called the 'Jean Brodie Steps'. We walked on up the road and back round to the Meadows - much easier!
It was SO windy walking across the Meadows - most unpleasant. So when we reached home, I was very glad to sit down on the sofa! In fact, I lay down on the sofa. And slept for most of the afternoon!
Big game tomorrow. Can Scotland retain the Calcutta Cup?
