Baptist

Despite stopping up far too late last night reading my book, I was up early and out and about, with some fresh film in my old SLR to take a walk round the narrow streets of the Birgu neighbourhood. My partner came and met me at 'Champ' on the square for breakfast, a real locals cafe selling Maltese pastizzis (savoury pastries). We went for the ricotta filled ones, got coffees as well, and the whole lot was less than €4 - we could well become regulars.

Ferry bus over to Valletta for sightseeing, and general wandering around whilst soaking up the atmosphere. A fabulous cathedral visit mid-afternoon, the highlight of which was the presence of not one but two Caravaggio works, including his largest ever painting The Beheading Of Saint John The Baptist as well as the smaller but no less magnificent one of Saint Jerome.

Ferry bus back over to Birgu where we caught the last of the day's light with a happy hour negroni before winding our way back to ours via what could well be the sole Vietnamese restaurant in the city.

Quite weary. Hard work this holiday business. Ahem.
