Mono matches
The safety match was invented in 1844 in Sweden by Gustaf Eric Pasch and refined by Johan Edvard Lundström. However, the existence of matches (in a less than a safe form) goes way back. In ancient China they were called the “fire inch-stick.” In England, in the 1800s, they were known as “Lucifers.” All were unpredictable and dangerous until the Swedes created the safety match.
Incidentally, these matches are in a matchbook that’s over forty years old and acquired somehow during a visit to Venice (see extras for a shot of the cover).
Thank you to Heanku for hosting February’s MonoMonday and also for today’s challenge “something typically Swedish.”
