Out and About in the 'hood
After I got back from school today I decided to go for a walk in the local area. The area behind where I am staying has a mix of Christian and Hindu families. Today I went into the Hindu area. The houses are very old and though they don't look very big, in fact they go back a long way. The blue colour the concrete walls are painted is very typical. Internal decoration doesn't really happen beyond painting the walls on a regular basis.
I've mentioned cows wandering the streets but there are lots of other animals too, these goats were just heading down the passageway beside their house. Goats are used for milk as well as for meat. Sheep and goat meat is commonly called mutton with no differentiation between the two.
The stairs lead to the upper floor, it's very common for there to be a separate family living up there. These steps have been beautiful painted.
I had hoped to take a picture of the local Hindu Temple here, when I was here just before COVID it was being extended. It sits in a large, strangely open area in the midst of the houses next to the communal cow shelter. I didn't take the picture as the priest was standing in front of it and waved cheerily at me. I felt it would be intrusive to take his picture, I may go back another day.
The group of young men are at their pop up food stall. It's there every night. They have an open back truck not much bigger than an auto, a pull along trolley with the hotplate on it some plastic tables and chairs and lots of banana leaves to use as plates. The small bags tied up in the back right are take away bags of gravy ready for when they get underway.
The tea stand round the corner sells me tea in a bag like that. They twist the type and deal then very effectivity with rubber bands. Taking the bands off without spilling tea or sauce everywhere is an acquired skill
The last image is of another pavement shop, this one has extended out the front as the road is quieter here. It's a brilliant wee corner shop with a good supply of fruit and veg, water and soft drinks and general grocery supplies both food and non food. It's always busy.
