Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

A day out to Peebles!

On the second day of our Archie-less holiday, we had mulled over the idea of driving through to Glasgow to visit the Burrell Collection, but the thought of all that traffic on the M8 put us right off. St Andrews? Always nice for a visit, but that awful drive home in rush hour over the bridge. Ditto for Crail and the East Neuk. So... we decided to drive SOUTH and go to Peebles. And we didn't even need to go near the by-pass and huge roundabouts.

I do like Peebles. We've been many times before, even with Archie. A walk along the river in the summer is a nice thing to do. I think we even had a picnic once, when he was a puppy. But not today. After yesterday's sunshine, and the morning sun in the city, we did not think of rain... but there was an umbrella in the boot. Anyway, it was only a few spits...

Some nice shops! Including, as we drove in, a MILKMAN! This is a famous cafe in Edinburgh, and it's two outlets are always jammed full. But we got a seat here.

We also got, in the most amazing hardware shop ever, a new extendable window cleaning thingie. We've been meaning to get one. JR was delighted. We also had ice creams.

We had a lovely drive back, and were amazed not to be coming in to the city the same way - somehow, we'd come up a different road...

Clockwise from top left: This amazing life sized statue was erected in 2016. It's made of recycled horseshoes and depicts a local hero, Scott Brash, who was in Team GB's gold medal Olympic team.

I quite fancy one of these wee cars... you can park them on the pavement!

Close up of the excellent art work in the mural. It's been there since 2015.

The fabulous mural of the town's history. It was down a wee alleyway, but opened up into a nice space.
