Sunlit from heaven
It’s been wonderful to see some sunshine today, and to feel its warm rays on my face when I went out into the garden. The birds were singing so loudly it made my heart sing with them, and there are so many pairs of birds that I feel sure there’s quite a bit of nest building going on. I have hung an old bird feeder full of sheep’s wool from the twisted hazel tree and soon afterwards I saw that there were some tufts sticking out, which shows that it’s already been spotted and sampled.
Recently I have seen two female and two male blackbirds in the garden at the same time, which is a fun prospect! What an exciting time of year.
This hymn by Eleanor Farjeon was a favourite of mine at primary school.
Morning has broken
Like the first morning,
Blackbird has spoken
Like the first bird.
Praise for the singing!
Praise for the morning!
Praise for them, springing
Fresh from the Word!
Sweet the rain's new fall
Sunlit from heaven,
Like the first dewfall
On the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness
Of the wet garden,
Sprung in completeness
Where his feet pass.
Mine is the sunlight!
Mine is the morning
Born of the one light
Eden saw play!
Praise with elation,
Praise every morning,
God's re-creation
Of the new day!
Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965)
