the long man

Here is the Long Man of Wilmington, who stands on the side of the South Downs in East Sussex. He is 227ft tall. It used to be thought that he was an ancient figure, carved out in the Iron Age, but archaeologists now think that he dates from the 16th or 17th century.

We visited him on our way along the Cuckmere Valley, and followed the river right down to the sea. The last part we walked, through the beautiful Seven Sisters country park. The Seven Sisters are seven famous chalk cliffs.
