Up the junction

This is the view from the covered access walkway to the 17 platforms at  Clapham junction railway station in South London. It dates from 1863 and is the busiest station in Europe in terms of the number of trains passing through it every hour. It is actually located in Battersea rather than Clapham which is a couple of miles away. I took the train there to  meet my daughter, Adele, and pick up her car to drive back to Chobham to get an issue with her oil filter warning light/alarm fixed. 'Up the junction' was the title of a BBC Play for Today broadcast in 1965. It was a dramatisation of a short story by Nell Dunn and directed by Ken Loach who went on to become a highly respected film director. It was a gritty play about the lives and loves of three young women living in Battersea. Those were times of great social change and the Play for Today series played its part in the process - another play, 'Cathy come home' shed light on the issues of homelessness and led to the formation of the housing charity, Shelter. Oh yes, and 'Up the junction' was also the title of a hit record by the British band, Squeeze.
