Portishead marina

We’re on a road trip ending up in Cumbria next Friday. Today, we travelled to Portishead to spend a few days in the company of an old college friend.

A beautiful day, cloudless blue skies for the jaunt along the 50mph speed restrictions on M20, M26, M25 and M4. It seems there were more speed restrictions than free flowing motorway.

Had a good walk around Portishead learning of its history and development from our guide who has lived here all his life. The area has undergone huge transformations since the turn of the century, changing from an industrial dock with power stations, factories and railway lines to a posh marina and modern dockside homes.

Our walk took us to Battery Point high up above the River Severn with fine views over the estuary to Wales and both Severn crossings. We took in the setting sun which was particularly spectacular although difficult to photograph.

We ended the day at a rather draughty Wetherspoon’s for curries and a pint. Good value, glad to get back to the hotel room for a warm.

Tomorrow we’re being given a guided tour of the Bristol environs. Tuesday will be spent in Bristol while on Wednesday we move on to Shropshire to see my Dad’s only remaining relative and my only connection with his side of the family.
