Hoi An

After breakfast, we took the Re-unification Express to Danang and a taxi onwards to Hoi An, where we went for lunchtime banh mi at Madam Khanh’s (‘The Banh Mi Queen’) and a slightly drizzly wander down to the river whilst they fixed our room. In the afternoon, we strolled back into town to look at the Japanese Covered Bridge and find a ticket office to sort out entry to the town’s historical buildings. We took a very tranquil tea break at the Reaching Out Tearoom whilst the tourist crowds intensified outside and finally made our way to the, quite frankly bonkers, Cantonese Assembly Hall – with its bright, ornate decorations of dragons, warriors, fish and mountain goats, amongst other things – just before closing, which meant we were able to enjoy it just as it was quietening down. We over-ordered from the extensive menu at the restaurant Morning Glory but managed to get through it all somehow – then we crossed the bridge and walked far enough along to find a bar quiet enough for us to sit and have a last drink in…
