Privilege

Day 2 of the holiday.

Today we went up to the heavily advertised "Top Of Europe" or the Jungfraujoch. This is the highest railway station in Europe and is visited by 700,000 People a year at the moment. the new director of the company that runs this wants to make it a million. I can't imagine how unpleasant that is going to be if he gets his way.

Before you take the train up to the Jungfraujoch, you have to change trains at Kleine Scheidegg. Sadly, someone nicked G's camera while we were there. Hugely annoying and quite sad. However, Kleine Scheidegg is worth a visit for the amazing views - especially of the north face of the Eiger, Mönch and the Jungfrau. Jaw-droppingly spectacular. If I had been fined 2 Francs for every "wow", it would have cost me about 100 Francs an hour.

And we had another reason to look forward to getting up to the top. Two friends of G run the scientific research station that is up there and they had invited us to spend the night in the station.

We got to watch the last tourist train depart at a quarter to six and then we were pretty much alone on the top of Europe. It is pretty bloody spectacular up there.

This Blip was taken when we went for a walk in the early afternoon. Taken from the head of the Aletsch Glacier - the biggest glacier in Europe - the scenery is beautiful. And it is difficult to comprehend the scale of things up there. If you see this in Big, then you can just make out some people. And some ladders on the cliff face. Then you might get an idea of how high the research station is from the glacier.

This part of the station is called The Sphinx and you can get up there. The views will rock your world.

And I can tell you that Views of the night skies are every bit as good as you'd imagine.
