Sandöverken
A small harbour, opening up off the Angerman River (Ångermanälven) just where it merges with the sea. The pillars of the High Coast Bridge are also visible.
In the summer this is a guest harbour for small boats but right now it's completely frozen in. There's a camper van overnight spot here, a cabin to rent at very reasonable rates, plenty of places for visiting boats, and a wood-fired sauna available to all. Actually the cabin and sauna are available year round but there didn't seem to be many takers just now.
We had been to Kramfors for our brunch, eating at the great Kurdish restaurant - delicious food at very reasonable rates!
We moved on to the Swedish alcohol monopoly to stock up on drinks. We tried to go for a walk on the ice but no-one else was out on the ice so Jan was nervous. We tried to walk around the small island Sandö, where we worked many years ago, but the fire service had an exercise under way, so the path was closed. In the end we took the beautiful back road along the river where HarlingDarling took her blip. The road ends here, where I took my blip!
A few minutes later we were driving home over that High Coast bridge you can see in the picture.
One last point... I mentioned a wood-burning sauna here. The sauna (a Finnish word), in Swedish "bastu", is an important part of both Swedish and Finnish culture. Sweden just chose a song about the sauna as their Eurovision song entry for this year. "Bara bada bastu" (Just take a sauna!) I was sure Swerden chose it to ensure they didn't win yet again, but I just read that they are currently the favourites to win anyway. The song is mostly in Swedish, with a Finnish phrase thrown in. The group KAJ who perform are Finnish, but from the Swedish speaking part of Finland. (Language, culture and national boundaries are complicated up here!)
Anyway - here's a link to the song. Both HarlingDarling and I roared with laughter as we watched the song for the first time, but I'm not at all sure the humour translates. We shall see...
