Kanchenjunga

At one point in Arthur Ransome's 'Swallowdale' - which was, in many ways, my favourite of the 'Swallows and Amazons' series - our protagonists scale "Kanchenjunga", their name for the Old Man of Coniston.

At the summit, they find a box left there by the Amazons' parents and uncle, a relic of their own youthful escapades climbing what they called "the Matterhorn".

I thought of this today when Mum showed me this card. She and Dad were on holiday with my Uncle Brian and his wife, Val, when they saw this postcard, which my uncle said was the worst he'd ever seen.

Mum nipped back and bought it later, and for years afterwards it passed back and forth between the couples. (See my Extra, which was an additional page stapled to the original.) You can see how our family extends from "B.G.+F." to "B.G.F+W." during that time.

It's the kind of daft, whimsical humour I enjoy, but there my parents and relatives were, enjoying similar jokes, nearly sixty years ago.
