Carneddau walk
Thank you for your good wishes regarding G’s broken tooth extraction yesterday. As you say, he’s very stoical, had a good night and it’s business as usual today.
Asking the most of the good weather, we head up onto the Carneddau in search of the truly wild ponies. It’s a few years since I’ve been up there - something I certainly couldn’t manage before my back surgery. I’m still slow, and I’m very glad we spot a small herd before we’ve walked too far. You never know where they’ll be - and of course there’s a real possibility you’ll not see them at all!
I’m more wary of the ponies out here on the hills - and seeing there’s a stallion and a couple of tiny foals I keep my distance. Still, getting close enough for photography involves finding a way through the gorse covered hills. G sensibly stays half way up the hill, while I slowly edge further up towards the herd.
I do love seeing them on their natural habitat, those flowing manes blowing in the wind. It’s hard to get good shots of the foals as they stay close to mum, often in the heavy shadows from today’s bright sun. As usual, I stay quite some time. It’s not the right terrain to see them canter off over the hills, but I keep a close eye on the stallion who sometimes looks as if he might gallop off in my direction!
My main’s a shadowy foal with mum who has the most glorious flowing mane. There are inevitable extras - this foal with the stallion (who had very little patience with the youngster), the other foal with mum, and - probably my favourite - a single pony grazing on the brow of the hill.
