Kariakoo

Kariakoo is a ward of central Dar es Salaam and is best known for its sprawling street market that spans several blocks. Long overdue a visit to see what it is all about, I went along with my friend Adam, who on the drive couldn’t avoid a police fine for some potentially fabricated infringement relating to a bus lane.

Sunday was a sensible choice as the market was busy, but I imagine around one hundred times quieter than most other days. I acquired some boxer shorts and jackfruit and we familiarised ourselves with the various sections: cookware, fruit and veg, clothing, cosmetics, and countless others.

They are in the process of refurbishing the large covered part of Kariakoo, which I shall enjoy returning to for a potter one day.
