Pouwhenua beside Great South Road, Southdown
This morning I went to Onehunga and then Otahuhu to collect what S had ordered on line for tomorrow's evening gathering to mark Mr H's 21st birthday (see extra). In the 1980s i would often pass through that part of Otahuhu. About then, the meat works (known as Southdown) was closed, and in the years since this has become an industrial centre.
The Pouwhenua is in the fore front of a large building housing the largest Maori owned fisheries company. Traditionally, such poles were markers of the boundary of a settlement. It is good to see one fulfilling the modern equivalent.
