The Lost XXVII
Here are a few of the Lost 27, part of a Roman legion reputedly lost when the Romans came north and decided to build the Antonine Wall a short distance away on the other side of our river, not venturing further north, afraid of the Picts and other tribes I suspect.
This sculpture is at the 17 mile mark on the cycle way from our little village to Glasgow, created in 1990 by sculpture and artist David Kemp
David Kemp lives and works in Cornwall. David Kemp’s work is serious but humorous. the serious side being he makes sculpture from the disregarded bits and pieces left behind, it always reminds me of the ethos of the Wombles!
This installation is no different, the legionaries are all manufactured from scrap metal discarded along the old railway line close to where the sculpture now stands and it is a source of wonder and amusement for young and old. The twins, like lots of children, love to mingle with the foot soldiers and join their ranks standing at attention before jumping out on an unsuspecting dad!!
It is difficult to shoot all 27 without a wide angle lens, sadly something I do not possess so I chose to shoot a rank, I liked the straight line and repetitiveness, the vibrant red against the greens and blues.
I hope you like our little army, they always make me smile and so it will always be, accessible art free to view, to touch to enjoy, what could be better!
