Blue Sky Thinking.

M and I decided to head off to another archeological site today - Tombs of the Kings. The site consisted of an amazing underground web of chambers and tunnels dotted with inlets for the bodies of important people to be laid to rest. No Kings were actually buried at the site, it was mainly rich townsfolk and councilors for the local government. There were also tiny wee lizards running everywhere, which I've get to get a good photo of - they're just too quick.

We walked around the whole site - it's quite large and, like everything here, very dusty; the sparkling blue sea in the background is such a juxtaposition. We'd bought a day ticked for the bus, so we decided to head back into Paphos and see what other places there were to explore. After a quick pint of Keo and a snack, we headed off to the Market in the centre of the town - I was expecting a market like those I was used to in Portugal: full of local food, cooked and uncooked, with fish hanging out to dry and rice in little bowls to taste. This market was very different! Although there were some fruit stalls, it was 90% stalls selling the exact same plastic tourist junk that is prevalent in the kiosks lining the beachfront: bags with cats on, t-shirts with mildly offensive slogans and leather friendship bracelets in every colour imaginable. We had to just laugh! After a quick wander round, we tried a prickly pear at the fruit stall (yuck - like a bland, excessively seedy passion-fruit) and bought a couple of nectarines, then caught the bus back.

We had an iced coffee at the harbour before walking back to our apartment for our usual routine: sitting on the balcony with a beer, then making dinner later in our teeny tiny kitchenette. We just had a big Greek salad for dinner with added lettuce - all the vegetables here are small and knobbly (it took me ages to identify a cucumber in the supermarket) but really flavourful.
