Some more camping
This morning we drove to Brenham,TX to run the Bluebell 5K. It was already packed when we arrived, but we were able to get a good spot to park our van.
The 5K was the last race and it started at 9:30am. When I was about half a mile in, I suddenly noticed people around me started running and screaming. I looked around and saw the barrier at the railroad track coming down. I adapted real fast and started running as fast as I could to cross the railroad before the train arrived. What a lousy timing to have a train delaying your running time in a race!
Luckily I managed to make it to the other side of the track before the train arrived, but it was a close call.
The rest of the race I felt my heart rate was too high and it wouldn’t come down. I tried a slower pace and walked a couple of times, but nothing helped. I crossed the finish line and felt exhausted. M was already waiting for me as he finished well before me (no surprise there). We went to get some water and then we stood in line to get some Bluebell ice cream. There we met up with a friend and her husband who are in my running club. We chatted for some time and then, after our fifth ice cream, walked back to the van.
From there we drove to Bluff Creek Ranch in Warda, TX. This is a working ranch with longhorn cows, but they have made about 9 miles of mountain bike trails on the ranch. It’s pretty neat! They also have some campsites around a small pond, so we found a nice shaded spot and parked the van. The rest of the afternoon we just sat in the shade and relaxed for a bit. Then around 4:30pm, we put on our biking gear and hit the trails. We rode about 6 miles and then called it a day. We can ride more tomorrow.
After a refreshing shower, and cooking dinner, we enjoyed the sounds of birds, crickets and cicades outside. And we could see the stars too.
I also found out online that I didn’t beat my time of 6 years ago. I was 2 seconds (!) slower today.
