1944: Germans slaughter Italian civilians in the Ardeatine caves

Quote Of The Day
"We were murdered in this place because we fought against a home tyranny for freedom and against the foreigner for the independence of our Fatherland. We dreamt of a free, just, democratic Italy. Be our scrifice and our blood the seed and the warning to the generations to come."
(Inscribed on a plaque at the entrance to the Fosse Ardeatine Caves Memorial Museum in Italy)

I finished reading the third book in the incredible Nevernight saga by Jay Kristoff, an author who has definitely earned a place on my "must read" list. Nevernight set the stage but was not outstanding; Godsgrave was the best in the trilogy, an absolutely thrilling page turner full of action, adventure and wry humour. Darkdawn continued in the same vein as Godsgrave delivering an epic climax and a poignant dicta ultima.

I'm going to read something short next because I expect when I go back to work on March 31 my colleague will pass on to me the sequel to Kristoff's thrilling Empire Of The Vampire novel, Empire Of The Damned. I can't wait to get my teeth into that (ha ha.)
