Islands
We spoke to a very helpful person in a Tourist information centre who told us about a couple of outings we could make from Harstad. The town itself is not somewhere I’d recommend really. It’s an industrial town with a ferry port. Anyway our hotel is pleasant enough but the weather is just as bad today as the previous couple of days, heavy snow, terrible visibility, very dull. But we’re in the Arctic and it’s March, so , to be expected really.
The tourist information was spot on. He directed us to a little peninsula just to the north of where we are staying to a place called Stolnes where we could get a free ferry to the island of Grytøya. We drove around that and stumbled on a lovely place, a grocery store with a cafe in the owners’ sitting room upstairs with coffee and great views ( through the fog) . They had a few crafts and some knitting yarns for sale.
After this little island, we drove through a tunnel to the island of Bjarkøy. These islands seem pretty remote but are amazingly well connected with ferries, bridges and tunnels.
A most enjoyable day of exploring.
Tomorrow is our last day and we have one more excursion planned all being well before we head back to stay near the airport for an early flight.
A couple of extras. Kids gathering for their skiing lesson, and a little harbour on Grytøya
