Hedge Mulching

Today we have been volunteering with the Hampshire Hedge Project, again.
This time we were on farmland near Braishfield, Romsey. First, we planted about ninety metres of new hedging which didn't take long as there  were about fifteen people at work. Then we had to mulch a stretch of hedge which was planted a couple of months ago. The purpose of the mulching is to  retain moisture and to suppress weeds, although when  planting small "whips" as we have, it is questionable how important this is. (However, mulching was a requirement of the funding.)
Unfortunately, for us,  since the hedge was planted, it has been fenced on either side,  marking the boundary between land owned by different people. This made it rather difficult to get the mulch to the hedge, and the mulch material had to be shovelled over the fence, and  then transported in wheelbarrows to the base of the hedge. In all, we shifted 20 cu metres of mulch. It felt all of that !
However, the upside was that we were a friendly team, the day was mild and rain -free, and we were accompanied by skylarks singing over the barley field, all day long.
