..endeavour to persevere

Choo - Choos !

The steamer season up to Carlisle started with a pair and conveniently on the same routes up and down.
Both headed north up the west coast main line to Carlisle and then returned south down the Settle - Carlisle line.
In the morning I was studying terrain maps and looking for tracks on OS Maps in an effort to find a spot where I could view the incline up to Shap summit. This paid off later when I drove to the closest spot I could identify, a road near Shap, - cars variously abandoned in the middle of nowhere - a sure sign of "spotters".  A bit of stumbling about over the moor and sure enough - spotters dotted about in the shrubbery and view down onto the WCML coming up to the summit of the line.
The extra is 34067 Tangmere  pushing hard up the Shap incline.
In the afternoon I was scouting about around Langwathby, my first choice location was a rail bridge over the River Eden, I was thwarted by a closed footpath and a ticking clock , plan B was to try to get a view of a viaduct at Little Salkeld but this would have needed some stealth tactics into someone's back garden, I was not that desperate - yet.  Plan C was to retreat to Langwathby station, on route I kept an eye along the raised embankment for any opportunity and spotted a Tripod at a 1000 yards setup on a bridge along a farm track ...  Abandoning my vehicle in true spotter fashion I headed up the track.. Up there 2 chaps from Lancashire with an Video Camera and 3 young lads up from London chasing trains for the day!  I felt a bit of a fraud having only travelled about 5 miles from home..
Blip is 45596 Bahamas giving it some beans down the line, in the background you can see the viaduct I was trying to get to.
