French connection
We spent the day on the Banks peninsula, visiting the lovely little town of Akoroa.
British settlers arrived here in 1840, and just pipping the French to bagsing it as their own. The French connection was then lost for a while and somewhere in the 20th century a marketing person (probably), thought it might be quite useful to have a bit of a French thing as a USP. Street names were quietly renamed, buildings suddenly found their long lost heritage and a few French flags sneaked in. So today the boulangerie was open and the rues busy with tourists.
A lovely place to spend a day.
