Xylotheque - a library of Scottish wood

found not far from where we are staying.

A quieter day, with a successful visit to the printers, the place is run by a lovely man who was calmness itself, chatty and business like.  Afterwards a toasted tea cake and coffee, some shopping and off to look for A Hidden Garden, easy to find once you know where to look. It was a good to wander through hellebores, tulips, daffodils and magnolia trees. The real gem was coming across this library of wooden blocks on the Mound, each book is made of oak with an inset a Scottish native wood. The block was made in the form of a book, the books are sat under the seat in this small area shown in extra. See a better description below.

A warm, summers day and time for a hot chocolate and toasted sandwiched to eat out in the sunshine, we may return for breakfast tomorrow.  A wonderful few hours of simple wandering and discovery.

Alec Finlay was commissioned by The Hidden Gardens to create Xylotheque : A Library of the Native Woodland. Situated on a raised area within the Gardens, there is an open square platform with an oak tree growing through the middle. Around the tree trunk is a library of wooden books. Open a book and you discover a sample of a Scottish wood and the name of it carved beautifully on the facing page. The seventeen native species of trees featured are Yew, Ash, Hazel, Oak, Aspen, Wych Elm, Juniper, Pine, Rowan, Silver Birch, Willow, Holly, Hawthorn, Gean, Alder, Apple and Bird Cherry.  The Hidden Gardens (opened in 2003) is an independent charity behind the Tramway in Pollokshields, on the southside of Glasgow
