Dunadd Hill Fort
Dunadd in the Kilmartin valley is believed to have been the capital of the ancient kingdom of Dalriada, where the first Kings of Scotland lived. It’s a rocky crag that may once have been an island in the midst of bog and moss, but ramparts were added to the natural defensive site to make a fortress.
At the age of 67, with two gammy knees and only one week after a disastrous failed chemotherapy session, I climbed this steep outcrop, scrambled on all fours in some places. Very proud of myself.
The entrance to the fort is through a rocky corridor between the two topmost crags. On top there are some ancient carvings, including a ritual stone basin thought to have been part of the coronation ritual in Dalriada, and a footprint carved out of the rock. It’s suggested that any potential king had to put his shod foot into the shape – if it fit, he could be crowned king. It’s a size 6, apparently. I could show you a picture of my husband’s foot – naked – sitting snugly in the print, but it’s far too scary to be shown before 9 o’clock. But if you are feeling particularly brave, you can see the footprint Here
