Smoke over Bute

Early yesterday evening, driving back from Dumfries, I came through a smoky haze that lay all along the Clyde from near the Erskine Bridge until Greenock.   It was the result of a heath fire further west, above Inverkip and in places you couldn't see across the estuary.

Today there was a similar haze over Loch Riddon and when Cathleen and I went to explore we discovered that Bute was covered in a similar cloud, which emanated from a series of heather fires on the SW of the island.  We managed to see them, eventually , from Tighnabruaich  and that image is my extra photo.

The smoke seemed to be channelling through the island and over the Kyes up towards Glendaruel.   It is still thick as I post this, and there is a strong smell of burning.

There have been lots of warnings about the fire risk arising from the current very dry, and very unusual, spell of weather.   It is however due to break at the weekend.
