A Change Would Do You Good

Today has not exactly gone according to plan. Though that has not necessarily been a bad thing. The original idea for today was to go to Mathewsons Classic Car Auctions in Pickering, to see what was coming up in next week’s sale. Unfortunately, the viewing does not start until tomorrow - a fact I only discovered after I’d booked all the hotels and planned the itinerary for our few days away.
However…after a slight detour to see the “Brick Train” sculpture, which was only half a mile from our hotel, we decided to head for Thirsk which was going to be a stop later on today anyway in the original plan. It is where the real life James Herriot (Alf Wight) had his veterinary practice and was the basis for the fictional town of Darrowby. We found the building where the practice was and it is now a museum/exhibition.
Thirsk was a very pretty little town and I think we’ll have to return for longer so we can explore property and look round the James Herriot exhibition.
For the rest of the day, we visited Meadowhall near Sheffield. This was going to be our destination tomorrow - a bit of shopping and then head home. Instead we went this afternoon and then headed to the hotel. A Travelodge in a motorway service area isn’t the most salubrious place to spend the night, but we were late getting here, and will leave early tomorrow to head to Pickering, so I’m sure it will be fine.
The net result of all this is that we will end up with more time in Pickering tomorrow and should have an easier/quicker journey back to Kendal. Which is definitely a good thing as I seem to have gone down with a raging cold overnight and really just want to be back home.
Though not before I’ve drooled (sneezed?) over a few classic cars tomorrow…
