Coralroot
This morning I cycled to Hillier's Gardens to meet my friend C. It was another sunny day, and we had a good walk around, enjoyed lunch, and of course, talked. She needed to offload about her partner who has early dementia. Magnolias, early Rhododendrons, cherries, and crab apple were in full bloom. However, this little wildflower, Coralroot, which we found flowering in a shady, damp area attracted our attention too. Its Latin name refers to the deep purple bulbils at the base of the upper stem leaves, which are visible in my photo.. Apparently, the bulbils are edible and have a mild cress- like flavour, while the root has a hot flavour. (However, we didn't try eating any of the plant, to verify Mr Google's information).
I had a call from the care home to say my Mother wasn't so well, so I visited her late afternoon. She was breathless again, and has been prescribed more antibiotics and a bigger dose of diuretic. She was sitting quietly in her room, tired, yet fairly content, although any exertion made her become short of breath. We phoned my sister in Cornwall for a chat, and then I helped her to eat her light supper, before I left. Hopefully she'll be feeling a bit better tomorrow morning. It's not nice being so old.
(Another long chat with my sister this evening.)
