A baked dozen
It is a special day today, marked by these 12 hot cross buns.
It is of course Good Friday or, as apparently in Germany, Sorrowful Friday. It always seemed odd to call the day Jesus died as “good” unless one subscribes to the belief that the events that day presaged the resurrection. The explanation the “good” is derived from the old meaning of good as “holy” (e.g.. The good book to represent the Bible) seems to carry more weight.
In any event it is a major day in the church calendar. We had an Episcopalian bishop leading the service this morning. Tonight there was a tenebrae service where the shadows lengthened as the 12 candles representing the disciples were slowly extinguished. When the final 13th candle representing Christ went out temporarily, the Minister slammed shut the bible. A Strepitus. Despite being pre-warned it was a shock after the silent meditation and evoked a jump and a squeal from at least one member of the congregation.
The dozen buns also represent 12 years of taking photographs daily and posting on Blipfoto. I think my 12 years without missing a day is achieved in a day or two but my formal blip anniversary by number of photos posted is today. I may not comment much on the photos of other “blippers” but I do enjoy the community and seeing what photos others take. So to them and the organisers many thanks. Www.blipfoto.com
