Hiking at Buzzardroost Rock

Tuesday
It was a lovely day today, so we got out to enjoy it and celebrate Earth Day by driving out to Adams County to go hiking up to Buzzardroost. It’s one of our favourite hikes, and I have blipped it several times over the years, in different seasons. This dolomitic outcrop towers 300 feet above the valley, and is named for the turkey and black vultures (buzzards) frequently seen soaring above or roosting on the rock. There were many wildflowers to enjoy, including great white trillium, rue anemone, wild phlox amongst others, and the umbrella-like leaves of the May apple clothed several of the slopes. The trail was really quiet today - we didn’t see a single person until we were coming toward the end of our return hike. I had made us some sandwiches to enjoy at the top whilst enjoying the extensive view, and we did some turkey vultures flying overhead. It was about 5 1//2 miles return, as much as we’ve done in one hike for a while, so I’ll soon be ready for bed!
