Saltburn-in-the-mist
I woke early this morning to see the sun rising between thin layers of cloud and by the time I was up it was a lovely sunny morning. As we got ready to go out, however, the mist came down and we set off for Saltburn-by-the-Sea, less than an hour away, though visibility was down to 100 yards or less. The mist had lifted slightly by the time we arrived, and the sun tried to show itself, but a few minutes later the sky clouded over and remained so for the rest of the day, accompanied by a chilly breeze.
We'd really come to ride the funicular railway which links the pier and the beach with the town above - it's the last remaining water-operated funicular in the UK. It's not a long ride, only 55 seconds - but it was fun. Once at the top we had a walk around, went for a coffee and admired the Victorian architecture. I wanted to find the Tourist Info to learn more about the town, but it had been closed and gone.
We walked down the hill and along the pier from where I took my Blip today, then set off down to coast to visit Staithes, another lovely old fishing village. We parked above the village intending to have a picnic lunch, but unfortunately the pong from the nearby farm was so strong that we had to close all the windows and eat quickly!
The walk down to the seashore was lovely, so many houses perched on the slopes and almost on top of each other! My extra today. I had a walk round the harbour wall and we then crossed the bridge to see the village from the other side of the Staithes Beck - such a tumbling of buildings. Strange to say, although it's Easter week, the shops seemed to be closed, maybe being Wednesday afternoon, and the Tourist Information was also closed, with nothing on the door to say when it would reopen.
My 120 or so pictures turned out rather lacklustre because of the weather, but we couldn't do much about that! One more day to go!
