My soul?

We in Finland say that "eyes are the window to the soul". Is it in English window or mirror. Is there a difference, does it matter?
My favorite photography writer, the late John Szarkowski, made a book (and exhibition) called "Mirrors and windows" and there was big difference. But it was about photographs, not eyes.
