Arctic circle adventure
Another fun packed day but this time exploring Bergen. It was difficult choosing a picture but I settled for this one and put some on fliker here.
Down by the harbour is the old town which was built around 1360 by the Germans as a trading town for fish and textiles with links to Brugges & London & the rest of Norway. It is built on reclaimed land and is made entirely of wood from the floor up. This made it easy to wheel the barrows up the narrow streets and wood was plentiful and cheap. It in now a UNESCO world heritage site and is being restored gradually.
Bergen is a university town and heaving with very noisy students at the moment . It is a a very busy port too and we counted 4 cruise ships today plus smaller yachts and several ferries. Fish is big here too. There is a static fish market plus a fish market with stalls where they cook the fish fresh for you to eat. The choice is vast from monk fish thought to whale and salmon and caviar.
Sleep did eventually come last night but the night club finished around 3am. We are expecting much of the same tonight. The street cleaning then begins around 5is!
