Newport, open for business?
Well, the jury is out at the mo, but it is my home town, and despite the condition of it I just can't help but to love it. If only everyone felt the same way about their home town, perhaps there wouldn't be so many closed shops in the high streets. I suppose we are all guilty though as Internet shopping is so easy and generally a lot cheaper. So why make the effort to get away from your computer when it is so easy?
Remember when nearly every Saturday we would go into our home towns and spend all day window shopping with friends, talking and laughing. Looking at all the latest records, may be catching a movie etc. Now most things are very impersonal, we text as we don't phone or meet. We read reviews and order on the internet instead of going to the shop looking and touching to see what we like. Has the variety that the internet can offer spoilt it? We were happy in those days with what we bought, now we know too much and always want what we can't have.
Our success in some areas certain caused the demise of others, can we get our town centres back thriving, even if they are a lot smaller than they used to be, well I hope so. May be there should be just electrical showroom etc, where we can go, look at, touch, talk about the items, see what's on offer but then just order on the Internet. They could stock one of each product, instead of a warehouse of items to sell, just like a car showroom.
Anyway enough crap from me and sorry if it don't make any sense, but I do find it very sad that nearly every town I visit around the uk is suffering rom the same thing. There must be an answer somewhere, and I hope it is found before its too late.
