Soldier Fly
These robust, rather flattened flies sometimes have yellow, green, or pale abdominal markings. The large species resemble wasps. The short antennae are distinctive , with the third segment bent outwards from the basal segments. The wings are folded flat over the body at rest. Although they are not particularly strong fliers, some can hover. They are larvae scavengers but are harmless.
