Great Dun Fell
Peeking through the gap in the hills is the summit of Great Dun Fell, the second highest peak in the Pennines at 848 metres. It's crowned by radar buildings originally part of the early warning system when the Russians were goings to nuke us. Now it's used for keeping aircraft on the straight and narrow. The bowl seen (there is more than one) is a feature on a clear day for many miles.
The road is about 4 miles long, continuously uphill but well surfaced and traffic free. It's a challenge to many cyclists. The gradient is between 8 and 15%. I've only made it half way on my bike. It's an ambition to get to the top. Coming down even from half way is a bit scary!
