SFMOMA
That stands for the 'San Francisco Museum of Modern Art'. Buses and trains later I left the Sierra and arrived in San Francisco. Lugging my too heavy backpack on my shoulders through the skyscrapers of downtown. My life for the next 9 months on my back for all intents and purposes. I have the afternoon to explore until I can meet with a friend and drop my pack. Making my way to the art museum to stow my bags behind the coat collection and get lost in another world. One of the joys of being in a world class city like San Francisco is the museums, the art and culture from around the world so accessible. I spent the whole day wandering the MOMA....
Through the soft warm brushstrokes of Georgia O'Keefe complemented side by side with the balanced natural contrasts of Ansel Adams photographs. Amongst the candid moment captured in photograph over four decades of American history by Richard Alvedon (my favorite by far - spectacular!). Through countless black and white images of past and present , and gazing on famous masters like Matisse, Dali, and other classics like Frida Kahlo and Diego Riviera that I chose to snap for my blip today. Food for my soul.
Later food for my belly, meeting my friend Vanessa downtown in the Mission District. Catching up over a dinner of paella mariscos and sangria at a Spanish tapas place that had a good vibe going and then stumbling on the most eclectic hole in the wall cafe for a glass of wine before heading home. An artists-writers-poets place full of bizarre and beautiful art and kitsch hanging from every nook and cranny of wall and ceiling. Old framed and signed photos of everyone from Alan Ginsberg to Ray Charles adorning the walls tight up against pinned down passages and poems from the likes of Jack London to Pablo Neruda. Welcome to San Francisco.
