Ride the Lights

It's exactly what it says.

Each year now, on the Tuesday before the Blackpool illuminations switch on, The Promenade is closed to motor vehicles.

The only way you can go along the 6 miles of the illuminations is under your own power on a bike or on foot.

Tonight has been busier than ever. They reckon it's usually around 12000 cyclists. There were definitely more tonight. I'm guessing but 15000 would not surprise me.

It's a wonderful family night out and completely free. You have to have your wits about you because little kids stop suddenly. And there are a few idiots. But people have been very good tonight.

The bikes were in all shapes and sizes. Unicycles were plentiful. Tandems too. An original Penny Farthing, and lots of bikes with wheelchairs attached to the front for disabled people.

Many people added their own version of the illuminations to their bikes and there were some wonderful creations.

A cracking night.
