The Shiants
We were lucky enough to stop off for lunch at the Shiants on our way across from Stornoway. They are absolutely spectacular and we were able to row ashore to have a look around. The islands lie 12 miles north of Skye and their previous owner, Adam Nicolson has published a very interesting book about them entitled 'Sea Room'. The Shiants are home to a huge variety of sea birds. In 2009 Ian Buxton re-caught a puffin he had originally ringed on 28th June 1975, making it at that time over 34 years old and beating a 33 year old Icelandic bird to take the title of Europe's most elderly OAP (old aged puffin).
