There and back again

Mistaken identity

This mornings walk was a bit of a nightmare, calves and anxious mother all over the place. After negotiating most of them I suddenly came across this one (Photo No1) laying all alone in a fairly empty space. It was not a new born and had been tagged and even as I stood watching I was approached, at a rate of knots, by a bellowing female and I was forced to retreat with Jinxy into a hedge. (Photo No2)

It then ignored us and made for the calf, bellowing all the time, when it was some 20 yards from the calf it stopped as the calf had made no move towards it (Photo No3)

There followed a few minuets of bellowing at different pitch but the calf made no attempt to move. It then seem to dawn on the cow that this was not its calf and after spending a few minuets looking around (Photo No4) it walked off in the other direction!
