Town House

I walked into town during my lunch break today and finally got round to reading the blue plaque on this rather desirable property in Haslemere High Street. It turns out that it was previously the residence of not one but two local notables, namely Josiah Wood Whymer (1813-1903), an engraver and watercolour painter, and his son, Edward Whymper (1840-1911), perhaps more excitingly an engraver and mountaineer . The younger Mr Whymper was famous for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865; sadly an expedition notable also due to the controversial death of four of the party during the descent, which haunted poor Edward forever more.

Home again now and keeping a low profile as the boys have friends to stay tonight for their birthday eve celebrations. As I type they’ve gone to Sainsbury’s and the kebab shop to stock up on provisions so I’m enjoying the peace while it lasts.
