Bergamo

Despite having lived in Italy for ten years I had never been to Bergamo. Today we put this to rights and after a short drive we arrived in the city. Initially we headed straight for the upper (and older) part of the city.

The upper city is best reached by a funicular. We had a long look around the old town, and collected many photographs. After lunch we returned to the modern city. The guide book said one of the streets remains largely unchanged since a date which I have subsequently forgotten.

We decided we still had enough touristic energy to carry us on and eventually found Via Pignone. Somewhat to my relief at this point I realised it also led us towards where our car was parked. The photograph is taken somewhere in Via Pignone (I think), however should not detract from what otherwise gives the impression of being a most prosperous city.

We return to Lake Como in the evening. The journey back did run into some rush hour traffic on the outskirts of Milan, but it could have been worse.
