A year in Canada

Day 37 – Anne of Green Gables, Prince Edward Isl.

Our first full day in PEI we visited Anne of Green Gable’s house, or at least the farm she based her description of Anne’s house on. This was a well looked after place run by Parks Canada with a couple of pleasant short walks which feature in the books (the Haunted Woods and Lover’s Lane). The original farmhouse here has been restored and items placed in the rooms to match descriptions from the books. Anne is so popular on the island that it is hard to believe she is actually a fictional character!! Locals talk about her lovingly. We also visited the grave of L.M. Montgomery which is only a 5 minute walk from the farmhouse. In 1942 just after her death, L.M. Montgomery was declared a person of National Significance by the Historic Board of Canada.

We later headed into Charlottetown to see the sights, and then drove up to Greenwich on the northern coast of the island. Greenwich is a National Park with a beach and sand dunes, and lots of mozzies!
