Double staircase

Strong winds forecast so we decided to visit Dover Castle with Joanna & Peter today. Sunny spells and showers but we managed to keep fairly dry most of the day.
There were reasonable views across to France with the cross channel ferries constantly entering and leaving the harbour.
There is much to see on this site with time scales ranging from the Saxon church to HenryII's castle and on to Napoleonic times. Tunnels were dug into the cliffs and these were used during WWII for billets, a hospital and control centre for Operation Dynamo. Vice-admiral Ramsay was in charge of this operation to evacuate British and French soldiers from Dunkirk. He had been associated with the Dover Patrol in WWI and was a brilliant tactician. 338,226 soldiers were evacuated in 9 days using naval vessels , fishing boats, and small leisure craft.
This double staircase winds up from lower levels to the top of the cliff.Officers used one side and the ordinary men the other.
