Us ,Them and The Other Lot

We walked back from to town yesterday and noticed a sign by the cliff advertising that The Grand Shaft was open this weekend as part of English Heritage weekend. We had no idea what it was so decided to explore.
A Napoleonic fort sits atop the cliff and a speedy way up and down was needed for the soldiers . A shaft was sunk with windows for light and ventilation round which wound three staircases . Rank dictated which one was used by whom. This is the top.
