Bronze Age Boat
This wooden boat was discovered when an underpass was being constructed in the centre of Dover . Pressure of time and money prevented the whole boat being excavated but one end was retrieved and treated to preserve it in a stable state. I think it may feature on a future Time Team program.
It is constructed of oak planks held together with yew lashings and dates back to 1575-1520 BC. The seams were sealed with moss and bees wax.
A small replica was constructed using bronze age tools and materials but was not very watertight. The crew members were given some wax to chew and stuff into any leaky holes !
It did blow very hard last night and we were very glad to be in the shelter of the harbour
