Sold the problematic D5100. Couldn't find anyone having similar issues. Quite the reverse, so must have been unlucky. Or at least I hope so. A brand new one arrived today, and all seems well so far. Cost a darn site less than the original refurbished one too. It will be a lighter (and financially safer) option when cycling in the more iffy weather, than the big beast. Good to be able to use some of the associated lenses again too.
